FCC Pushes for Reassigned Number Database
November 27, 2018
Proposed Reassigned Number Database
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has called upon fellow commissioners to approve a proposal that would create a comprehensive database for reassigned phone numbers in the U.S. The proposed database would alleviate TCPA risk for companies by verifying numbers in their calling lists – and specifically identifying that they have not been reassigned to a third party. Chairman Pai’s proposal will be reviewed at the next Open omission Meeting on December 12.
Additionally, this database would protect consumers from unwanted calls that were intended to a prior subscriber of a called number. Chairman Pai also seeks to categorize text messages as an informational service – rather than a call service – which would allow carriers to use text-blocking and anti-spoofing to protect consumers from spam and unwanted messages.
